Visiting the bush of Amboseli, Kenya was a childhood dream. My family and I were guided by a local member of the Maasai Warriors, seeing the vast landscape through his eyes. We was fortunate enough to encounter Craig, the legendary wild elephant known for having the largest tusks in the world. Fewer than 30 “super tuskers” are believed to remain in Africa, and meeting him outside the national park on our way to depart Kenya stirred emotions I still struggle to put into words. What struck me most was his awareness, he watched my every movement, responding subtly each time our eyes met, as if communication needed no sound. Thanks to the Maasai Warriors who protected Craig around the clock from poachers, he lived as long as he did.
