Filming Poetic Kinetics’ Skynets Over Downtown Denver

Something colorful has drifted over Downtown Denver.

As videographers and editors, we had the opportunity to film “Skynets Over Downtown,” a public art series by Colorado-based artist Patrick Shearn and Poetic Kinetics.

The exhibition features three floating kinetic sculptures: Sun Splash above the fountain at Denver Union Station, Quaking Gold over Glenarm Plaza and Skyline Drift at Skyline Park.

Each sculpture is made from thousands of lightweight ribbons that move with the wind. Every breeze changes the artwork, creating new patterns of color, light and movement. That constant change made the installations especially interesting to film and edit.

We focused on capturing the scale of the sculptures and how they transform the spaces beneath them. Wide shots show their relationship with the Denver skyline, while close-ups highlight the movement of the individual ribbons.

The finished video brings all three installations together and captures the color, movement and unexpected wonder they bring to Downtown Denver.
